Affirmations for social anxiety

For arriving, for staying, and for the replay afterwards.

Social anxiety runs on three separate timers, and most advice only addresses one. There is the dread before, the hyper-awareness during, and the post-mortem afterwards, which is often the worst of the three and the one nobody prepares you for.

These are written for all three. Some lower the bar for what the evening has to be — you do not have to be interesting, you have to be there. Some give you an exit you probably will not use, which is usually what makes staying possible. And some are for midnight, when you are replaying one sentence you said four hours ago that nobody else remembers.

What you will not find is anything telling you to project confidence or own the room. Being liked is not a performance you can execute your way into, and trying is generally what makes an evening exhausting.

  1. Most people in this room are thinking about themselves, not about me.

  2. If I'm quiet today, that's allowed. Quiet isn't a failure to perform.

  4. One conversation. Then I can step outside for five minutes.

  5. Asking people about themselves is most of what conversation is.

  6. Being nervous doesn't stop me from being good company.

  7. I don't owe anyone a version of me that's easier to be around.

  8. Arriving is the hard part. It gets easier once I'm inside.

  9. Being liked isn't something I can perform my way into. I can stop trying so hard.

  10. A pause in the conversation isn't mine to fix.

  11. Saying I'm tired and going home is a complete sentence.

  12. I'm probably not the only one in this room who feels like this.

  13. If they didn't like me, I'd survive that. I have before.

  14. I've had good conversations before. I wasn't a different person those nights.

  15. Sending the message is the whole task. The reply was never mine to control.

  16. Thirty minutes. If I still want to leave then, I'll leave.

Questions

What helps social anxiety in the moment?

Lowering what the interaction has to achieve. Asking people about themselves is most of what conversation is, and it costs almost nothing. Knowing you can leave whenever you want tends to be what makes staying bearable.

Why do these sound different from most affirmations?

Most affirmation lists ask you to declare something you do not believe — "I am completely calm", "I am a magnet for peace". Ours are written to be sayable by a skeptical adult on a bad day. They acknowledge the difficulty first, then hand you something to stand on.

How often should I read them?

Once, properly, beats twenty times while scrolling. Most people pick two or three that land and come back to those. Ballast sends one a day and then stops.
