Morning affirmations for anxiety

For waking up already dreading the day.

Waking up anxious is a physical event before it is a psychological one. Cortisol peaks in the first half hour after waking, which is why the dread often arrives before you have remembered anything to be dreadful about. It feels like information about your day. It is mostly information about your endocrine system.

That is worth knowing because it changes what the sentences need to do. They are not arguing with your reasons — you probably do not have reasons yet. They are holding a line until the chemistry settles, which for most people it does within an hour or two.

The other thing these do is shrink the horizon. The first hour, the first task, the top of the list. Planning the whole day at 7am while your body is in alarm mode produces a plan built by the most frightened version of you.

Questions

Why do I wake up with anxiety for no reason?

Cortisol rises sharply in the first thirty minutes after waking. For some people that lands as physical dread with no attached thought. It usually eases as the day gets underway, which is why the morning is a bad time to make judgments about your life.

Why do these sound different from most affirmations?

Most affirmation lists ask you to declare something you do not believe — "I am completely calm", "I am a magnet for peace". Ours are written to be sayable by a skeptical adult on a bad day. They acknowledge the difficulty first, then hand you something to stand on.

How often should I read them?

Once, properly, beats twenty times while scrolling. Most people pick two or three that land and come back to those. Ballast sends one a day and then stops.
