Affirmations for feeling overwhelmed

For when everything is urgent and only one thing can be done.

Overwhelm in a house with a new baby is not really about the number of tasks. It is that all of them present as urgent at the same moment, while the noise is at maximum and you have not finished a thought since morning. The dishes, the crying and the unanswered message all arrive with the same alarm attached.

Some of that is arithmetic rather than failure. There is more work here than one person can carry, and in most houses fewer hands than the work assumes. Nothing about your competence changes that number.

So these sentences do two jobs. They shrink the horizon — the next feed is the only real deadline, two things is a full day, nothing needs planning past this afternoon. And they separate the standard from the care, which get confused constantly. A bad version of dinner is still dinner. Nobody is coming to inspect the house.

Where it tips from heavy into frightening, say so to a doctor: if you feel unable to cope at all, or the overwhelm never lets up between days. That is a common thing to raise and it is not an admission of anything.

Questions

What do I do when everything feels like too much at once?

Narrow it until it looks absurdly small. The baby is fed, the baby is safe, you are breathing — that is the entire list for the next hour. If it is the crying and you are at the end of yourself, putting the baby down in the crib and standing outside the door for sixty seconds is a safe thing to do.

Why do these sound different from most parenting affirmations?

Most of them ask you to feel grateful. Ours do not. They are written to be said out loud by a tired adult who is not enjoying this today, which rules out most of what gets posted under this heading. They name the hard part first, then hand you something to stand on.

How often should I read them?

Once, properly, beats twenty times while scrolling one-handed. Most people find two or three that land and come back to those. Ballast sends one a day and then leaves you alone.
