Affirmations for lonely new parents

For 3pm on a Tuesday, when you have spoken to no adult since breakfast.

It is 3pm on a Tuesday. The last adult conversation you had was at breakfast, if there was one. The room is warm, the noise is constant and none of it is language, and the day has felt long since eleven. This particular loneliness is not the same as being alone, and almost nobody warns you about it.

It compounds at night. Every window on the street is dark and you are up, and the arithmetic of that hour makes it feel like you are the only person in the world awake. In fact you are one of thousands within a few miles doing exactly the same thing, which is a small fact that helps more than it should.

The friends who went quiet are mostly not avoiding you. They assume you are busy, they happen to be right, and the assumption hardened into silence on both sides. Sending one message is far easier than arranging one visit, and it is usually enough to break the silence.

The lines here are written for both halves of that: the hour you are in right now, and the small, slightly awkward, entirely reasonable thing you could do to be less alone next week. Nobody can tell how cut off you have felt unless you say it, which means you can say it.

Questions

Why is new parenthood so lonely when I am never alone?

Because company and conversation are not the same thing. You can spend twelve hours in constant physical contact with someone and have nobody once ask how you are doing. Feeling alone in a room with other people still counts as feeling alone.

Why do these sound different from most parenting affirmations?

Most of them ask you to feel grateful. Ours do not. They are written to be said out loud by a tired adult who is not enjoying this today, which rules out most of what gets posted under this heading. They name the hard part first, then hand you something to stand on.

How often should I read them?

Once, properly, beats twenty times while scrolling one-handed. Most people find two or three that land and come back to those. Ballast sends one a day and then leaves you alone.
