Affirmations for sleep deprivation

For the 4am shift, and for the day that follows it.

Sleep when the baby sleeps may be the least useful sentence in circulation. The baby sleeps in thirty-minute pieces at unpredictable times, often in your arms, usually while something else in the house needs doing. The advice assumes a shape of day that does not exist.

What is happening to you is closer to a physical fact than a mood. Broken sleep across months degrades memory, patience, coordination and the ability to finish a sentence. Losing the thread halfway through a thought is not evidence that you are becoming a worse person. It is what four broken hours does to anyone, including the parents who look like they are managing.

So these are written for two separate moments. There is the shift itself, at 2am or 4am, where the only useful sentence is short and the only real goal is daylight. And there is the day after, where you are expected to function on nothing and are quietly convinced everyone can tell.

Nothing here tells you to fix your sleep, because you cannot fix it right now. It also does not claim this lasts forever. Nights are not going to stay like this. They are just not different tonight.

9 affirmations

  1. I've been awake since 2am and I'm still functioning. That is not nothing.

  2. I'm not thinking clearly today. Four broken hours is a fair reason for that.

  3. I lost the sentence halfway through. That's sleep debt talking, not me.

  4. Twenty minutes on the couch is worth taking. I don't have to save it up.

  5. If there's an hour of help on offer, I take it. Turning it down helps nobody.

  6. Bad night, ordinary morning. The two don't have to match.

  7. I keep tallying the hours I got. The tally has never once added one back.

  8. Nights are not going to stay like this. They're just not different tonight.

Questions

What can I actually do about sleep deprivation with a newborn?

Mostly you take rest in pieces you would once have considered pointless — twenty minutes lying down, one shift covered by someone else, the offer of help you would normally turn down. Lying down with your eyes shut counts even when sleep does not arrive. Counting the hours you got has never added one back.

Why do these sound different from most parenting affirmations?

Most of them ask you to feel grateful. Ours do not. They are written to be said out loud by a tired adult who is not enjoying this today, which rules out most of what gets posted under this heading. They name the hard part first, then hand you something to stand on.

How often should I read them?

Once, properly, beats twenty times while scrolling one-handed. Most people find two or three that land and come back to those. Ballast sends one a day and then leaves you alone.
